3 Critical Impacts from the Stress of Change:

EMOTIONS: Neuroscience and EQ (Emotional Intelligence) focus on how to use the brain to manage our emotions. However, what’s missing from this approach is addressing that stress not only reduces blood flow to our brains, but that it closes our hearts too!

The stress of change can cause us to fall into conditioned patterns of not only fear, but also the emotions of shame, guilt, anger and/or pride. These emotions can make us more judgmental and critical, more likely to blame ourselves or others for circumstances. They can make us quick to anger or spiral into despair.

ACTIONS: The stress of change doesn’t just hijack our emotions. It causes us to double down on our innate patterns of action, our instinctive strengths for solving problems. It’s another way we try to gain some psychological safety, by returning to our “home base.”

The problem is that leaning into our innate patterns of action under stress can also amplify our inertia, whether it’s analysis-paralysis or possibility-spinning, depending on our MO. It also makes our problem-solving blind spots (and everyone has them!) even more difficult to see.

INTERACTIONSInteracting with others, under stress, exacerbates the potential for conflict, and it’s not simply because our emotions are hijacked. Under stress, it’s more likely we are all leaning even harder into our innate patterns of action.

The impact of the stress is exponential…not only diminishing our individual productivity, but it’s often the underlying source that derails decision-making, collaboration, and trust when we’re working together.
